- What's the background behind this campaign?
31 July residents of Deri Road Penylan were sent a letter from Cardiff Council informing them without consultation about their plans to remove 8 Crab-apple trees. The trees in question are in fact actually cherry trees and the beautiful blossom in Spring calls into question how 'diseased' as claimed by the Council they reallly are. With each tree being 50 years old the felling would mean the destruction in one year of 400 years of tree growth.
- Has any evidence for the need to remove these 8 trees?
None as yet has been provided which is worrying as in a nearby road, Boverton Street, Roath an independent tree surgeon compiled a report clearly showing their trees were healthy.
- Will these trees be replaced?
The wide tall cherry trees with a beautiful spring blossom will not be replaced. Instead a smaller, different species will be planted in February/March 2008. However, this has been called into question as an unpublished Government report, 'Trees in Towns II', has revealed how councils are failing to plant new trees at a fast enough rate to keep up with safety felling.
- Has any public consultation taken place?
The Council has failed to discuss the removal of the trees with the residents, instead opting to send a letter telling them when they plan to cut them down.
